“Maman, what do you mean by lies?” I asked.

My mother straightened her strand of pearls she insisted on wearing even in the summer heat and patted a few stray grays back into her chignon bun. “I do not wish to speak of such things right now.”

My eyebrows furrowed together as I narrowed my eyes. “What do you mean? Before we came to France that was all you wanted to talk about.” I didn’t mention the episode that set this all off, the grocery store and the flashing lights of the police car escort. Now she didn’t want to talk?

“People are allowed to change their minds, Bernadette DuMont.”

Was it messy to get into family drama in front of strangers? Yes. Yes it was. But my mother’s lucid moments were becoming fewer and further in between. “I heard my dead father’s voice. He seemed terrified that something was happening to the realms. I can’t help but remember Simon jumping into that rift…”

“Your father is dead,” she said sharply. “And so is Simon. Leave them that way.”

Romaine looked intense as he listened and Sophie was slack-jawed. I paused. Wait, they weren’t moving. They didn’t even look like they were breathing.

“Maman, something’s wrong.” I went to Romaine and Sophie and snapped my fingers in front of their faces. They didn’t blink. “Maman, get behind me.”

“It’s fine, ma chére. They’re just waiting for us to finish our discussion. Are you quite finished?”

Now it was my turn to go slack-jawed. “You did this to them?”

She shrugged, enigmatic and infuriating all at once. How very French. “We were broaching sensitive topics. Now, I trust, we are not.”

“Maybe we still are broaching them, Maman,” I said, some of the old fire rising to the surface as I put away handling my mother with kid gloves. That bad habit I’d gotten into didn’t help her or me. “What are you? What am I? What are you doing right now?” The silent, and can I do it? hanging there in between all of that.

“Fine.” My mother stood, shakily, I noticed. “You want to know something?”

“Yes! I want to know my history. I want to know your history. I want to know about my father. Oh, and maybe why there’s no record of either of us at the prefecture in Paris? That would be great.”

“I said something, not everything,” she snapped and then slumped back on the bench, putting the back of her hand to each cheek. “Mon Dieu, courting death grows wearisome. I am sorry, Birdie. I do not wish to be short with you.”

“It’s fine,” I murmured. “The heat doesn’t help our tempers. But Maman, we can do things that no adept should be able to do. Why? How?”

“That is true. Your ability to sense the vibrations of all matter is more acute than anyone else in the world. Truly. It sounds hyperbolic, but it’s not. Well, besides my ability.” Maman allowed herself a small smile. “But because of our power, we must be doubly careful of our active magic.
